With $2 billion in sales, Dot Foods is the largest food redistributor in the U.S. Each year we harness new technologies to make our products and services more accessible and convenient for our customers:
- Manage the flow of inventory on a real time basis
- Integrate all functions of the warehouse into one system

The MARC system employs bar codes and radio frequency (RF) units to track inventory. MARC helps automate everything from receiving and replenishment to picking, loading and adjustments in the warehouse. MARC also allows us to print delivery receipts and prepare paperwork for drivers.

To ensure efficient warehouse operations, Dot Foods uses the GS1 numbering system to uniquely identify product at the case level. The advantages of using the GS1 numbering system extend from production and manufacturing through inventory and warehouse management to distribution and beyond.
One of the most well known GS1 identification numbers is the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN). The GTIN is the foundation of the GS1 System (formerly the EAN.UCC system) for uniquely identifying trade items.
Dot now requests that suppliers apply 14-digit GTINs on all packaging. We also ask suppliers to provide us with GTIN's on all item/price lists and other electronic transactions, such as purchase orders, confirmations, ASNs and invoices.
GTIN is an open, global standard that offers many benefits:
- Allows system-to-system interaction
- Speeds processes
- Lowers costs, while reducing errors
- Reduces the risk of system incompatibility
- Eliminates supply chain roadblocks and bottlenecks
For information on obtaining GTINs, please contact GS1 US (formerly the UCC).
