We are very sad to share that Jerry Yates passed away yesterday, February 20, 2020. Jerry was one of Dot's initial employees and worked for the company for 57 years. He played a significant role in Dot's success.
Jerry joined the business in 1963 as vice-president of maintenance and was our founder, Robert Tracy's (RT) righthand man. He was responsible for managing the team that maintained all our tractors and trailers. Along with serving on the Dot Board of Directors for several years, he also did whatever he had to do around the business to help Dot survive in the early years and be successful long-term.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Dorothy Yates. She is an outstanding woman, and we can't thank her enough for the years their family dedicated to the company. We will keep her in our thoughts and prayers as she goes through this difficult time.
While Jerry didn't have any kids of his own, he had a big impact and held a special place with all of RT and Dorothy Tracy's 12 kids.
"For many of us, Jerry Yates was the most important person in our lives other than Dad and Mom," John Tracy, Dot Foods executive chairman, said.
Joe Tracy added, "To many of us, he was our second father. He did the same for so many of our maintenance technicians, drivers, and other employees as well."
Jerry lived a long life and turned 86 just recently. Until only a few weeks ago, he was always around the Dot Foods Mt. Sterling garage very early in the morning, offering a quick greeting, laugh, or support to anyone who needed it.
Jerry was a legend in our business, and in the family. We will celebrate Jerry's life during our 60th anniversary week in May.
